autopope makes the point ("On being born in the past") that most people living nowadays really wouldn't like to have been born in the past, back before antibiotics and human rights legislation and cheap computers and modern democracy. We might flirt with the idea, we might even want to visit the past, but living there? We value our lives--never mind our comfort--too much for that.
