[BRIEF NOTE] 21st Century Infotainment

rfmcdonaldWhile commuting to work this morning via subway, I picked up a free copy of Metro Toronto at the Bloor-Yonge TTC station. Metro is a thin read, filled with pared-down articles from the Toronto Star and news service clippings, and I read quickly, but it was good for a once-over.
I stopped dead on page 31. On that page, right of the fold and in the upper left corner, was a picture of Julianne Moore caught midlaugh. Below the picture was a brief three-line blurb talking about how the picture was taken of her at the awards ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize. Little to no mention was made of the broader context: who won the award, why, what was said.
Even the free press needs to provide a bit of context for its quotes. Reducing the Nobel Peace Prize to the smile of a pretty and talented actress is a bit much.
