Any hopes new Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper might have had for a media honeymoon ended abruptly on Tuesday, when newspapers condemned two of his cabinet choices as "deplorable" and "political expediency."

The cabinet, unveiled on Monday, included a political ally of Harper's who did not even run for Parliament, and a former Liberal minister who switched sides to join the Conservatives.

In the run-up to the January 23 national election, Harper had said he would only consider legislators for cabinet posts. His party reacted bitterly in 2005 when a Conservative switched sides to join the previous Liberal cabinet.

I think Canadian federal politics is set to become a bloodsport. I give the Harper government another year, myself, before the next election.
