[URBAN NOTE] AIDS (General Idea, 1987)
Aug. 25th, 2006 04:55 pmGeneral Idea's 1987 sculpture AIDS is now on display just outside the Royal Ontario Museum, on the southwest corner of Bloor Street West and Queen's Park in the middle of downtown Toronto. The sculpture has already gained some recognition, not only for its erection at the beginning of the recent AIDS conference, but for the graffiti that adorns it.
I first encountered General Idea's work with a friend in a 2003 exhibition at Kingston's Agnes Etherington Art Centre, on the grounds of Queen's University. As I seem to recall, the AIDS sculpture didn't feature prominently in that exhibition, which concentrated more on their work of the late 1960s through to the mid-1980s. I was curious about this work and so, yesterday afternoon, I walked over to see it.
What surprised me most about it? I'd expected something larger than the near-cube 1.5 metres or so on a side. It didn't seem large enough.
