I'm not at all a fan of Marvel's ongoing Civil War storyline for reasons that [livejournal.com profile] larkvi wrote about well over a year ago regarding The Incredibles. In that film, the identification of the protagonists as heroes could be sustained only if you accepted the thesis that humanity's genetic superiors should obviously allowed dominance by virtue of their innate superiority. Never mind the trigger of the Stamford Incident--can any polity that isn't a failed state allow private individuals to inflict punishment, often lethal and indiscriminate, on evildoers? Registration might well be wrong, but surely some enforceable regulation has to be implemented, if only to protect innocent bystanders.

That said, I've found myself taken recently with the Marvel universe. No, I don't know for sure why I never noticed it before, though I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that DC Comics put out the TOS and TNG in the 1990s. It might just be me in full fanboyish flush writing, but I can't put down titles like House of M, the Dark Phoenix Saga, and the various titles in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. The storylines are compelling, the reimagining of Galactus in the Ultimate universe being a particular standout.

Yes, these comics are all works of high drama often verging on the camp; yes, as someone said, these books are really nothing more than soap operas for geeks. I've a healthy respect for the serial, though, and I certainly like Buffy and Angel. I'm just sorry that I haven't picked these up before now.
