It was an interesting experience, watching George Bush announce the deployment of twenty thousand more troops and a carrier group to Iraq on FOX at the same time that I read Paul William Roberts' A War Against Truth, reportage of his experience in Iraq in 2003. It was an especially interesting experience to hear Bush speak as I read select passages, like the one describing American infantrymen laughing as they shared the story of a girl screaming and on fire as she stood next to the vehicle that she had been riding in with her parents, or about how Mainichi Shinbun photographer Hiroki Gomi accidentally killed a Jordanian airport security guard with a cluster bomb that Gomi thought would make a good souvenir because it looked like a children's spinning top. The bit about hoping that Iraqis live a civilized life was particularly noteworthy.
