In today's episode of CBC Radio One's show Definitely Not the Opera, host Sook-Yin Lee announced that one-tenth of the Canadian population uses Facebook.

Canada has embraced the social networking website wholeheartedly, with nearly three million users logging into Facebook -- more than half of them daily. Canada has the greatest number of Facebook users outside of the U.S.

Toronto is the largest regional network in the world with its 637,956 members. This is especially remarkable as the website was born south of the border.

However, Facebook describes its Canadian growth as "explosive," and said Canada, along with the UK, is the website's fastest growing market.

At its core, Facebook is a place to share information and communicate and people are really starting to see it as an effective utility in their lives,' said Brandee Barker of Facebook.

Just over 277,000 Facebook users have registered from Vancouver, more than 146,200 from Ottawa and nearly 128,000 from Montreal. In comparison, London, U.K. is second to Toronto with 574,149; New York has 247,431; Boston has 158,385; and Los Angeles has 127,903.

At this rate, Facebook might become almost as Canadian as Orkut is Brazilian. Only briefly, granted--social networks do span national frontiers, and while not especially small Canada's Internet-using population is smaller than others--but it may well happen.
