"If Detroit loses it's finito, caputo," the guy unloadig boxes Kensington Market grocery store said, with a rude gesture of his fist, to the truck driver as I walked north towards Baldwin Street. Baldwin is divided into two portions by Spadina, the eastern portion a dense concentration "some of the city’s best eateries, heritage properties and what some might even consider a small town in the heart of Toronto," the western part an axis of Kensington Market dense with cheese shops and movie theatres converted into playhouses and the like.

The street had pretty much emptied out by the time I got there, left-over garbage on the sidewalks in front of locked doors and grilled windows. Thus my worst fears were confirmed in advance of my destination: Casa Açoreana ((235 Augusta Avenue, photos here), maker of some of the best coffees I've had the chance to drink, was in fact closed. I hope it was another casualty of the long weekend--I'd hate to think that a coffee houe would close before 7 o'clock.
