Bronski Beat's 1984 single "Smalltown Boy" is a song that--for me, at least--is rather more important as a cultural artifact than it is as a song. Nothing personal, but I really don't like Jimmy Somerville's falsetto.

The song's important, as its producer writes, as one of the first explicitly and identifiably gay hit songs in the transatlantic pop music world of the early 1980s (or 1970s, or ...) It doesn't have much resonance for me, apart from it being one of my less favourite songs on MuchMusic's 80s music video weekend; I didn't connect with the song's meaning. I think.
