The Prince Edward Viaduct, crossing the Don valley and connecting Bloor Street East in the west with east-end Danforth Avenue in the east is a beautiful bridge with a beautiful view, but its heights made it a tempting destination for people planning suicides, in North America ranking behind only the Golden Gate Bridge. The signs offering phone numbers to distress centres have been there for a while; the Luminous Veil, a collection of nine thousand vertical rods that form an effective barrier visible just beyond the sign, has been an effective safeguard against that.
