My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nire_nagaf for calling this event to my attention.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Alberta's Premier Ralph Klein, in his decade or so of rule as premier of the second-largest province in Canada by population and wealth he has gained a fairly controversial reputation because of his economic policies (generally right-wing and free-market) and because of his personality (somewhat overexpansive and careless). As an example, he once showed up drunk at a homeless shelter.

Now, it seems that he has gotten into trouble for justifying Pinochet's 1973 coup in a legislative debate about, of all things, public auto insurance.

And now, it seems that Klein may have committed plagiarism.

Alberta's Klein Accused of Plagiarism in Essay, Journal Says  )

The essay is here, available in Word for Windows format.

The paper, in its entirety. )

Speaking as someone who has been a TA for the past year, Klein's paper isn't up to par. I'm surprised that it got a 77%, the undigested quotations aside, between his abysmal citations, frequent mistakes of grammar and spelling, and a fundamental incoherence to his writing (is he writing of his own experiences of the media, is he writing about the coup?). Possibly a Communications degree doesn't have high standards, though I'd hate to think they were this low. Gack.
