• Via Language Hat, Merlyn de Smit's essay "A 'Paradigm Shift' in Finnish Linguistic Prehistory." In referring to the specific situation on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, de Smit criticizes the traditional classification of languages based not on actual contact between languages but rather based on implied genealogical descent.


• In the International Tribune Herald, Roger Cohen has an article on the German-Polish relationship. His verdict: Still somewhat tenuous, but definitely improving.


• The Pacific News Service provides an article describing the latest wave of ethnic Korean immigrants to Los Angeles, coming not from the Korean peninsula but from other Korean immigrant places in countries as far apart as Argentina, Brazil, and Uzbekistan.


• Transitions Online carries a memorial to Czeslaw Milosz.

[NON BLOG] Nothing Much

I picked up new cheques at the RBC on Yonge and Bloor, making damned sure after the last two months' cheque debacle that everything worked out. I then proceeded to an adjacent Bank of Montreal to pay my Queen's bill, for once and for all.

This, I've decided, will be a Learning Experience.

The job hunt continues. Starbucks is looking awfully good right about now--you could probably live off of their coffee and pastries.

I hope to meet up with eclips1st tomorrow. I've been having problems getting through to her cell.
