I've added All About Latvia to my blogroll. I've discussed various matters on soc.culture.baltics with the weblog's author, Aleks. It provides a good insiders' look at the dynamics of the least prominent of the three Baltic States. (Estonia's E-stonia, and Lithuania used to be a great power.)

In the course of replying to one of my many New Year's Eve E-mails, I realized something with a start: I can't remember the last time that I played.

Certainly I've had fun, doing any number of things: socializing informally, communicating more formally, exploring any number of geographical locations and cultural moments and interpersonal relationships. Certainly I've been happy: I'm somewhat concerned, in fact, that my default mood seems to be consistently and strongly positive.

What I can't remember having done for years is different: I haven't been ludic. There have been no moments of Bakhtinian abandon for me. Everything that I've done has been for a specific purpose or another. I haven't done anything for the simple pleasures of immediate gratification since I was a child.

This is going to have to change.

I linked to last month's brief posting concerning my personal experiences with the relationship between non-heterosexual sexual orientation and non-typical gender norms, and opened the floor to erxplain why there should be any kind of postive correlation at all. The comments thread is here.
