My post yesterday about the nonsensical claims of councillor Giorgio Mammolti that, even as he spoke, "Communists" were trying to subvert Toronto to transform the city into a totalitarian polity with state control of citizens' own properties and thoughts triggered something in me. It's not that his definition of "Communist" as anyone who doesn't agree with cutbacks and privatizaton is ridiculous; it's not that his claims of a vast conspiracy are supported only by the reality that Paula Fletcher, currently councillor for Toronto's Ward 30 (Toronto-Danforth), was active in the milquetoast Manitoba Communist Party in the 1980s. It's that, of late, people use terms to describe people and parties--"fascist", "communist", "multicultural", and so on--in ways that don't seem to reflect reality. Misuse of language, obviously, can have catastrophic results.

Am I right? What terminologies are being misused--sloppily used, inaccurately used, ridiculously used--near you? Is this going on more? Or am I just twitchy?

Discuss.
