In the course of a very fun party last night--more on that later--I chatted with at least a couple of people who complained that they found it difficult to navigate my Livejournal postings, to know what they should read if they're interested in reading about (say) me as opposed to (say) my last meditation on cultural dynamics. Some explanation of the headings that I use, then, is warranted.

[META] : This is a [META] posting, relating to the underlying structure and function of Randy McDonald's Livejournal. Most of my recent [META] posts have related to blogs that I've added or removed from my links, but there's a variety of other occasions where [META] would appear. This one, for instance.

[NON BLOG] : This heading indicates that a particular post belongs to a category of posts which are defined mainly by their non-bloggishness, at least as I defined bloggishness and non-bloggishness back in early 2003. I wasn't sure even then what that implied; I'm certainly not sure now. For now, let's just say that [NON BLOG] is more likely than any other heading to denote a posting describing things which are happening to my in my life (excluding, say, a cultural artifact or event that I had enjoyed and was reviewing, or something else). It's not perfect, but it's serviceable.

[REVIEW] : What it sounds like, a review of a cultural artifact or event that I had enjoyed (or not, as the case may be).

[BRIEF NOTE] : This denotes a brief bloggish posting, no more than a couple of thousand words in length. Don't want to read a [BLOG-LIKE POSTING]? Read a light version!

[URBAN NOTE] : I use this heading fairly rarely, to indicate posts relating my impressions of various neighbourhoods in Toronto.

[BLOG-LIKE POSTING] : This heading is reserved for my very longest and most complex posts. If you're looking for postings of mine with multiple Livejournal-cuts, this is the heading to look for.

[QUIZ] : There are some entertaining quizzes out there. You know that there are.
