In order to commemorate N's impending departure for Buenos Aires (in the middle of a Canadian winter, too), N., S., E., and I went to the launch party of a seven-inch single put out by The Midways and The Glads The Rivoli on Queen Street.

  • The Pauls (see the brief mentions at NOW, Wavelength) apparently are a successor group to the Size Sevens. They had interesting ideas, though more than one suicide/murder ballad is excessive. Unfortunately, their execution was lagging.

  • The Glads put on a decent enough hard rock show. I felt that the show was a bit derivative of a type (though others disagreed with me). That said, it was a good type to be derivative of.

  • My favourite band was The Midways, with their 60s pop organ. N. was right that they were basically The Glads with, well, the addition of an organ. Still, I liked it. Cute keyboard player, too.

When the show ended at a half-past midnight, we went west to amble up Spadina to the Red Room. It's a very nice place, with an interesting pub-meets-Chinese ambiance. Further fun was had discussing, over and after various alcoholic beverages, the vagaries of identity politics (Michael Jackson's transcendance of human norms, gender issues, questions of collective responsibility and transgenerational justice).
