Riding the streetcar, I was sitting down on one side of a streetcar, minding my own business, when someone wearing jeans cut above the shins and carrying a stuffed knapsack on his pack approached two people on the other side of the car.

- There's going to be an earthquake by the end of the month, he said. He had an English accent, not from the north of England, and a faintly breathy voice. I was reminded of Tricky. The San Andreas fault was going to slip, and tear, and unprecedented damage would be done.

"God tells me," he continued. "God tells me what I don't want to hear, and Satan tells me what I want to hear." It was difficult for him to distinguish between the two.

He got off a couple of stops later. I didn't look at him as he passed me.
