[livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll has today posted another mordant rumination, considering the question of why the political structures of the future depicted in science fiction tend to be so centralized. Myself, I tend to think that we've an effective first draft of a future world government already in the European Union. Indeed, the European Union in its early 22nd century incarnation as the Post-Eurasian/Mediterranean Union might well be that world government.
