  • George Steiner's The Portage to San Cristobal of A.H. is, sensibly enough given its subject, a draining book. It's a good book, though, a perfect instance of an intellectual's novel, like Iris Murdoch.

  • Roman Polanski's 1971 film version of Macbeth seems to be marked by the events, in the summer of 1969, at 10050 Cielo Drive. This influence becomes particularly clear when the killers come to loot and murder MacDuff's family at MacDuff's home.
