The Marmot's Hole links to Suk-Jung Han's article "Imitating the Colonizers: The Legacy of the Disciplining State from Manchukuo to South Korea" over at Japan Focus. Han suggests that many of the public rituals of national loyalty in both Koreas can be traced directly to Japanese models on the satellite empire of Manchukuo.
