Fresh from the previous night's debaucheries, I, as part of a party of seven, made my way to Angel's Diner (23 Wellington Street East). We got there at a quarter to ten, when there was already a couple dozen people ahead of us in the lineup. We were lucky enough to speed through and be directed to a long table.

Angel's is one of the chain of five theme restaurants in Ontario southwest of Toronto, catering to the imagined nostalgia of North American baby boomers about the 1950s: early rock and roll, vinyl-seated chairs at greasy spoon diners, movie stars like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. The fact that the Angel's in Guelph carries seniors' menus is indicative. So too is the large size of the portions given to customers. The food that I ordered--a mushroom and Swiss cheese omelette, with home fries and rye bread toast, and two coffees alongside--was more notable for its quantity than its quality, but it was still good for all that. Prices were certainly affordable. It was perfect food for a post-party Sunday morning.

This, it seems, was common knowledge. The restaurant was crowded, with couples in their 50s and half-costumed students from the University of Guelph seated in the boothes next to us alongside families, and when we left the line was four dozen people long. Angel's' owners have it made.
