Over at Harry's Place, Harry writes ("Britain's accepted inequality") about his Lancashire hometown of Nelson. He's pessimistic about the chances for his hometown's revival, arguing that the fairly thorough collapse of Nelson is all too typical of the north of England in the wake of the collapse of that region's manufacturing industries. Other regions of the United Kingdom might be undergoing similar crises--in Wales, in Scotland, in Northern Ireland--but they at least have vigourous regional media and political organizations. England's depressed interior, it seems, has nothing.
