[C22] France in the late 2140s
Dec. 7th, 2005 11:34 pmIt seems as if France has finally pulled out of its economic slump, recording strong economic and population growth. French GDP per capita is still lower than that of Germany, never mind Italy or Scandinavia, but another cycle of strong growth should let France catch up. The convergence of the rest of the planet towards the same high living standards, at least comparable to that of the First World circa now, means that France can be an economic leader only when it comes to per capita output not total output. Elsewhere, French scientific research continues splendidly even as the colonies boom, with almost a half-million people living beyond Sol system. Things are good.
The only trouble, apart from what seems to be the impending war of partition to be waged against the Arabian federation by Iran and three of the world's hyperpowers (the Trans-Oceanic Pact of the United States, Brazil, India, and Indonesia), is the fact that the galactic hegemons appear to be taking an interest in humanity. "Taking an interest," in this case, can be defined as the abduction of human starships and the buzzing of human colonies. MRSITG appears to come from the direction of Arcturus. You will doubtless be pleased to know that none of France's colonies lie in that direction.
