[NON BLOG] On Play
Dec. 19th, 2005 02:52 pmA while ago, D. asked me why I was seemingly of two minds about the importance of play, as alternatively liberatory and a mere reshuffling of the cards: "Why are you forcing it to be macro in its effects, when it might be just what it is, i.e. micro? And if it is micro, then what justifies criticizing it on grounds that don't apply?"
Originally, I was going to reply that I was skeptical of the ability of the micro level to undermine the macro level, of the ability to gain anything more than temporary brief victories ("We will be heroes/just for one day") but then I realized that he was right. Chalk it down as my skepticism towards forms of social interaction that aren't straightforward discourse.
Now, I'm off to find a way to amuse myself. Little things into big things, snowballs into avalanches.
