I wonder if the exceptionally grim and gritty novels of Martina Cole, all describing despairing desperate people stuck in the criminalized underclasses or underclass-level criminal networks of England, faced with no future apart from the certainty of real death for the people they love if not themselves, sell despite or because of their grim grittiness.
