I caught The Animatrix in its entirety for the first time last night thanks to [livejournal.com profile] finfin, and I have to say that I'm impressed by it, pleased enough to forget the obscenity that was the third live-action installment in the movie trilogy. It helps that the Wachowski brothers' only offensively dumb contribution to the disc was the two-part "The Second Renaissance", which not only manages to present a completely nonsensical scenario for the decay of human-robotic relations into apocalyptic war but repeats the old canard that machines draw their power from human bioelectricity and "a form of fusion." All of the shorts, even "The Second Renaissance," are visually attractive. I'd particularly recommend "Final Flight of the Osiris" for its combination of stunning graphics and a nice quiet human story, the wild unbelievable hope of "Kid's Story", "Beyond"'s literally playful investigation of programming errors in the matrix, and the enjoyable combination of alternate-history steampunk and noir detective fiction that makes up "A Detective Story". It was an hour and a half well-spent.
