Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] raphinou mentioned that CNN had issued a warning on travelling to Toronto given this city's crime spree.

It is true that violent crime is up in Toronto. So far this year, with Monday's murder of Jane Crebe, Toronto has seen 78 homicides and 52 gun-related homicides. In 2003, the city of Chicago, Toronto's apparent rival in the North American Midwest, had experienced 560 homicides through November of that year. That was Chicago's least violent year since 1967. Yes, Toronto has issues, but insofar as the risk of being murdered goes it's still nicely ahead of major American metropolises.

-- At least it was CNN, not Fox, I suggested. Then they'd be talking about the threat to American civilians and the need to send forces to protect them.

We began laughing as I continued.

-- Don't forget Chalk River was the first nuclear reactor outside the United States ... And we're just north of them.
