Following up on yesterday's note about South Africa's local elections, it's sad to note that the results still show the continuing racial divides of South Africa. The Democratic Alliance had the strongest showing in the provinces of Western Cape and Northern Cape, the historical core of the old Cape Colony and the modern Cape Province with their strong Afrikaans heritage, while the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party had a strong showing in the occasionally separatist KwaZulu-Natal. The ANC, secure in its legitimate heritage as leader of South Africa's liberation struggle and assured of mass support, swept the rest of the country. The old differences between regions and populations remain. As noted in the discussion at Jonathan's original post, it's unlikely that ANC strength will weaken whether through a division of the party or through the growth of the opposition.
