Double Happiness Restaurant, one block west of Bathurst Street, is an unprepossessing restaurant recessed away from the sidewalk, positioned above a money-transfer firm specializing in sending remittances to Latin America. Double Happiness is a restaurant with a nominally East Asian theme, J-pop playing on the speakers in a room of small tables dimly lit but enlivened by walls painted the bright colour of blood oranges. The waitresses didn't speak much English, and were fairly insistent that I couldn't sit and wait for [livejournal.com profile] talktooloose to come without ordering. They were right to do this, since Double Happiness has a cheap and competitively priced lunch menu. I chose one of their lunchtime specials, fishcake ramen, and got a constantly replenished clay kettle of green tea in the bargain. The food was simple but good--accustomed to the cheap 99 cent readymade packiages of ramen that one buys in grocery stores, I never knew that ramen could actually, well, taste. Best of all for someone whose payday comes tomorrow, my share of the bill came to less than six dollars before the tip.
