zarq has a
roundup of links regarding New York City secessionism. Me, I'm reminded of the half-serious and intermittant campaign for a
Province of Toronto here. Call these movements versions of the red state/blue state split, that itself a variation on the standard divide between urban and rural areas that can be found in most every country large enough to have a non-homogeneous population. For whatever it's worth, one should recognize that secessionism in both New York City and Toronto is very much a minority movement, and a protest movement, and thus unlikely ever to reach fruition in either metropolitan area.
