Remember last August, when I wrote about John Barnes' Thousand Cultures series ("Barnes' Thousand Cultures: Past Trajectories, Future Directions") and suggested that the fourth novel in the series might deal with mysterious aliens and the oddly silent human world of Addams (stretching my argument only a little) the definition of personhood?

Via an inadvertant Google search , I discovered. hosted on the website of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, an excerpted segment of Barnes' short story "The Little White Nerves Went Last". This story is, in turn, taken from the fourth Thousand Cultures novel (The Armies of Memory). In reading "The Little White Nerves Went Last," I discovered that my thesis was entirely right.

I'm really looking forward to The Armies of Memory. You should too.
