Re: Application to Master's Program in English
Dear Sir/Madame:
Please accept this letter as my intent to apply to the [insert university name here], MA program English. I would also like to be considered for any available scholarships, fellowships, and teaching assistantships that may be applicable.
I am interested in pursuing doctoral studies at this university because of its highly celebrated reputation. I have been in contact with the English Department, [insert name of contacts].
I am a Canadian student currently completing my undergraduate studies at the University of Prince Edward Island, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. I have a wide variety of academic interests, as demonstrated by my graduation from UPEI in May 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majors in English and Anthropology, and my return to UPEI for the 2002-2003 academic year in order to convert my English major into an Honours English major and acquire a History minor. I find that my academic studies provides me with an excellent basis for my interests lie in Canadian and comparative literature studies in an interdisciplinary context, which as my enclosed proposal explains, I would like to explore at [insert university name].
I include in this application, as my writing sample, an essay of mine examining John Glassco's Memoirs of Montparnasse and its relationship to the social situation of his contemporary Canada.
Please find attached a copy of the completed application forms, my curriculum vitæ, a writing sample, the acknowledgment card, and a statement of program that provides more specific details on the area I wish to study. I have made arrangements for my references and my official transcripts to be sent directly to your department.
My thanks for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Randy McDonald
