The latest installment in Disney's surprisingly successful Pirates of the Caribbean series was, as I can personally attest, enjoyable. This was my first exposure to the character of Jack Sparrow, mind, I having had the bad luck to decide not to see the first installment, but I was decidedly amused nonetheless. (Oh. Johnny Depp is quite good. But then, we knew this already, didn't we?) The Caribbean of the movie was clearly a Caribbean that never existed, whether or at or in quite that way, but it was an amusing Caribbean to watch, easy on the eyes and filled with pleasant plot threads (the morally erratic but goodhearted hero/villain, the disenchantment of the world under the pressures of a Weberian rationalization inimical to myth, myths of redemption and salvation connected to fundamental ties of family and the spiritual worlds).
I'd fun. Now, to see the first installment.
