I caught The Break-Up with J. this weekend. I can see how the writers might have intended the film to work as a comedy, at least at some levels, and at some levels it is a comedy, an only mildly funny examination of the adage that people hurt the ones they love. Jennifer Aniston doesn't display the chops that she did in Friends with Money, perhaps because her character seems to come fairly close to her Friends persona, but both she and her fellow star Vince Vaughn did such a good job of portraying people in love who can connect only through the mutual infliction of pain. If only their characters could have talked, or walked those few steps down the hall of their (very nice) condo.
