[NON BLOG] Slow computer - freeware?

rfmcdonaldRight now I'm labouring with a slow Internet connection for reasons which apparently have nothing to do with my ISP, not least because my computer is also noticeably slower. Does anyone have suggestions as to specific freeware and kindred programs I might use for a computer five years old that runs Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed?
