[MUSIC] Dalbello, "eLeVeN"
Dec. 17th, 2006 12:00 pmI came across Canadian recording artist Dalbello, her 1996 album whore, and that album's single "eLeVeN" via MuchMusic, Canada's indigenous alternative to MTV. Following a conventional enough career in Canadian popular music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dalbello apparently ended up switching to rather more intense songwriting--lyrically, vocally, musically--placing her in the ectophile sub-genre. Talking on MuchMusic almost a decade ago, she called "eLeVeN" a song about anger, about counting one number past ten.
The album took some time to grow on me because of its intensity. But, as anonymous commenters have said, whore is "eclectic, evocative, beautiful and fierce," and "eLeVeN" is probably the most listener-friendly song off of that album. She does mean what she sings.
i see you
call out for me
the line between Truth and Desire
crumbles so easily
i count the seconds
and the minutes seem like hours to me
i count to seven
and the heat turns up another degree
i count eLeVeN for the
reasons why it happened to me so easily
i count eLeVeN
eLeVeN
