[REVIEW] Hairspray
Jul. 19th, 2007 11:59 pmLast Wednesday, I caught a promo showing of the new movie Hairspray with Jerry.
Reviewers claim that this version lacks the edge of John Waters' 1988 original, and they're probably right--Waters' only visible influence on the film is his seconds-long role as a smirking flasher--but despite that the film still manages to combine an endearing energy with nostalgia in a decidedly viewable manner. Particular standouts about the cast are Michelle Pfeiffer's tangibly evil Velma, and Nikki Blonski's naively enthusiastic Tracy Turnblad. John Travolta's not bad either as Edna Turnblad; I think that this film's writers and directors understood why putting a male actor in drag to play a woman is so funny.
