It was all quite good. We spoke nothing but French, with some admixtures of English to provide translations or to let our two non-French-speakers feel included in the conversation. Lebanese food is good, and the choice of venue was quite appropriate given Lebanon's traditional and continuing Francophilia. Allan's personality shone through--granted that he had some problems, he was basically understandable and did show excellent grace under pressure. It was nice to talk in French with other people, and gratifying to find out that my French-language skills hadn't deteriorated nearly as much as I'd thought: A moderate level of fluency in French is good to have, especially if I get into McGill, that university in the middle of a metrpolis with two million Francophones.
