Yesterday on the
toronto livejournal community, a 2 o'clock protest against the Church of Scientology, set to take place outside of Toronto headquarters of the Canadian Church of Scientology (some pictures here), was announced.
Just 15 minutes ago, I was walking north up Yonge Street when I happened upon the protest. It's a notable one for that part of Toronto, with well over a hundred people crowded up on the snowbanks lining either side of that stretch of Yonge Street and more streaming south and north. Many of the protesters, handing out pamphlets and holding up slogans like the phrase of this post's title or "Knowledge is free/Scientology isn't," were masked, in scarves or in the harlequin's mask from V for Vendetta.
Does anyone know more about what's going on? I'm given to understand that it's an Internet-organized protest, plausible enough given the number of websites listed by the pamphlet that one participant gave me.
(For the record, I've said my bit on Scientology back in 2005. I'm also leery of the idea of organizing protests against specific religious denominations, for whatever that's worth, no matter how dubious some of the denomination's behaviour might be.)
UPDATE (1:54 PM): Substantially crossposted to the
toronto community.
