I find it difficult to take Cyndi Lauper seriously, and her "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" has a very strong nostalgic value for me. There's no contradicton there.
I'm not knocking her. Her pop feminism inspired a nice reworking of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" into a feminist anthem, I'm not knocking her positive record on gay rights, I'm quite willing to concede that she's musically quite accomplished, and it isn't a matter of any particular fondness for the actual film as popular as it might be. It's just a matter of my association of that song with my early childhood, what with the timing of its release and Lauper's yelping voice and the sweet-bordering-on-treacly synthpop music. I just associate this light happy song with that innocent time of my life and the artist who sang that song with light happy things. I don't think I'll be able to get past these associations, but I don't want to and besides, there are certainly worse associations that a singer could have.
