Torontoist's David Topping has an ongoing and interesting series of posts, "Metrocide", which examines statistical trends in Toronto homicides. The first post in the series suggests that per 100 000 people Toronto was considerably more violent than it is today, as violent crime rates since 1981 have grown significantly more slowly than Toronto's population.
