Class has been cancelled today--severe storm conditions. (Apparently the Confederation Bridge is closed.) So, more time to work on my MacLennan segment of my Honours and on my sundry assignments for ENG 493. Much more time--next week is reading week.

Feb. 13, 2003 | PARIS -- The bitter standoff between the Bush administration and three longtime European allies over Iraq war plans continued for a third day Wednesday, as France, Germany and Belgium rejected the United States' scaled-down request that NATO prepare to defend Turkey from an attack by Saddam Hussein.

The argument is largely symbolic, and the U.S. has promised to bolster Turkish defenses without the blessing of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization if necessary. But the division over Iraq is so stark and so deep that some analysts say it could precipitate the rise of a new world order in which Europe acts as an independent power to check and contain the U.S.

I was looking at Ikram Saeed's blogspot when I noticed rather interesting statistics: Briefly put, "[p]opular support for a US-led invasion of Iraq is no higher in France or Germany than in most of Rumsfeldian 'New Europe'."

Briefly put, the members of the "Vilnius 10" are, as has been observed elsewhere, desperate to join NATO; public opinion in Britain and Spain and Italy is scarcely more supportive of the United States; and at least in the Czech Republic, Havel's signature doesn't reflect government policy.
