Today is Canada Day, the national holiday that celebrates the beginnings of Canada's development as an independent nation-state. It's unfortunate that Toronto's gala has been canceled on account of the ongoing city workers strike, but still, the afternoon has had pretty decent weather and the popular mood seems to be good.

Today is also Shakespeare's first birthday.
