I've a post up at Demography Matters that takes a look at South Africa's perplexing admission to the BRIC group. Mounted substantially on the BRIC countries' desire to gain legitimacy for their group by including a notable African country, South Africa could have had such a stronger claim to global status if only apartheid governments hadn't so horribly destroyed the social capital of the large majority of the population. I only hope it can regain the ground that it could have enjoyed if only people were less evil.
