rfmcdonaldI always feel pleased when I hear "Hello" come on--during book club night last Thursday, say--because I feel like I have, or can have, an inside track.
The song is by French DJ Martin Solveig, featuring the vocals of Dragonette a.k.a. Martina Sorbara. I first heard of him through Mylène Farmer, of a remix of her song "Dégénération". I'd heard of the Torontonian group Dragonette back in 2007 when their first song came out, "I Get Around". I even knew that they collaborated before, through their song "Boys & Girls" for Jean-Paul Gaultier, part of a promotional campaign for a new perfume. When "Hello" came around last year and became a fairly notable transatlantic hit--well, Europe and Canada--I felt vindicated.
The song fits their styles, the video of Solveig's humourous struggles on the court (his struggles being a motif of past videos) fitting this sprightly pop song with the teasing lyrics sung so well by Sorbara in her inimitable own style.
