[MUSIC] Beirut, "Scenic World"
Mar. 24th, 2011 03:19 pmToday's been one of those days where I needed a bit of rigorous whimsy.
Myself, I went and bought a disposable camera and went to the midtown Toronto neighbourhood (or "neighbourhood enclave") of Wychwood Park to take 27 pictures of that interesting-looking upscale Arts and Crafts-style belle époque district. It had been a while since I was there last, the foot of snow the metropolitan area was unexpectedly blanketed with makes it look more than like than--well--most of Toronto's actual winter, and there's something about the particular disciplines and technologies associated with real film that's helpfully constraining.
And then I went home, logged onto Facebook, and found that Shawn had posted the video for Beirut's song "Scenic World", track #3 off of the project's Lon Gisland EP.
Beirut, says Wikipedia, "combines elements of Eastern European and Balkan folk with Western pop music, fusing the American mainstream and indie-rock culture and the World Music market".
It's bricolage, it's unexpected, it works. The accordion's great!
