Today it's a holiday.

Tomorrow the 23rd will be the actual holiday, the Victoria Day when everyone is supposed to celebrate the monarch, but today Sunday the 22nd is the middle of the glorious long weekend, from Saturday through to Monday. Little thought is lent to the monarch at any point on this long weekend save, perhaps, as an excuse for relaxation and drinking and fireworks and the lot.

The thing is, Victoria Day is uniquely Canadian. Yes, Canada is a Commonwealth country like New Zealand or the United Kingdom or any of them, but for whatever reason Canada is the only country to have this holiday. It's an idiosyncrasy that works for us.

And your country? Does it have a holiday unique to itself? (Holiday"s" plural?)
