[MUSIC] Rihanna, "We Found Love"
Feb. 2nd, 2012 11:54 pm"We Found Love" is the latest massive hit single of Rihanna. Produced by Scottish DJ/electropop singer Calvin Harris, it's a very catchy house song with a thumping beat and Rihanna's trademark brassy vocals. The official video received just under 122.8 million views as of my last viewing.
Lyrically, the song is dominated by the phrase "We found love in a hopeless place". This motif, along with the signature controversial music video and explicit statements of Rihanna and others involved in the whole project, lends itself fairly easily to the idea of the song as an artifact product of an unlikely and intense but ultimately failed romantic relationship. I think that analyzing the song even this much risks placing too much of a burden on it. It's just a hit song.
It's a hit song. two people told me that "We Found Love" reminded them of Black Box's first single, Ride on Time".
The two songs do share the house music against which a vocalist repeats a lyric. Is this coincidence? (Doubtful.) Is this homage? (Plausible.) (Is this honest homage, or is it something worse?)
Discuss.
