[PHOTO] Trans March, Yonge Street, 2011
Apr. 15th, 2012 02:11 pmLast year, Toronto mayor Rob Ford's inability to be present at any of the events in the ten days of Toronto pride started off one of the first major controversies of her career as mayor. Why, people rhetorically asked, was Ford breaking with tradition? Surely it couldn't have anything to do with the man's well-documented homophobia?
Much fun was had with Ford in the main Pride Parade on Yonge Street, which featured appearances from (among other people) past mayors and NDP leader Jack Layton two months before the man's death of cancer? Public parades had made fun of this before in the 2011 Pride season, however, with a couple hundred people from the Yonge Street splinter of the Trans March walking down Yonge below Wellesley with their own costumes and placards, all while the charming cheery Lily Allen song "Fuck You" played from the speakers.
It was fun.
