Toronto city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, one of Rob Ford's major allies and a man with a record of making interesting controversial statements. Last year, in chronological order, he has gone on the record as wanting to create a red-light district on the Toronto Islands, trying to defund Pride Toronto for allowing the presence of even the individual members of Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (not the group itself), and warning of an extensive Communist presence on Toronto City Council. Now (as the Toronto Sun's Don Peat observes) Mammoliti favours building a casino in downtown Toronto to employ single mothers.

Appearing as a guest on Mayor Rob Ford’s Newstalk 1010 show, Mammoliti floated the idea that a casino in Toronto could create “10,000 jobs” for residents — specifically single moms.

“Imagine how many single mothers we can actually train, perhaps if they want, to become dealers,” Mammoliti told Ford and his brother Councillor Doug Ford during an on-air discussion.

The pro-casino councillor added that a Toronto gambling complex would lead to constructions jobs and other spin-off jobs “for years to come.”

“Casinos is at our fingertips right now guys ... I don’t want to give it to Mississauga, I don’t want to give it to Markham — those are the two municipalities that we are going to be competing with,” he added.

For the record, I oppose siting a casino in Toronto--at least in downtown Toronto--owing to the negative effects that casinos have on businesses in their neighbouhoods where they're located.
